L’épée du soleil

J’ai toujours eu un rapport de fascination avec le point-virgule ; me voilà dans la lignée de John Irving et d’Herman Melville… On ajoute une dose de contextualisation anglophone (sur l’usage dégénéré de la ponctuation en anglais) et ça nous donne ce petit article savoureux :  « Sex and the semicolon ».

the punctuation conversation has shifted its focus from the apostrophe to a more subtle and debatable punctuation mark: the semicolon.

The credit probably belongs to Trevor Butterworth, who in 2005 - citing Truss as partial inspiration - wrote a 2,700-word essay on the semicolon in the Financial Times. Butterworth, who had worked in the States, wondered why so many Americans shared Donald Barthelme’s sense that the mark was “ugly as a tick on a dog’s belly.” His answer: As a culture, we Yanks distrust nuance and complexity.

Superbe histoire dans le New York Times : un architecte prend l’initiative, à partir d’un vague souhait exprimé par les propriétaires, d’inscrire dans les rénovations de l’appartement l’idée d’une quête de sens caché à travers divers procédés, diverses cachettes (littérales et figurées). Le visionnement des photos montre la qualité du travail exécuté, et l’article relate l’histoire du projet (et de sa découverte par les occupants, médusés mais ravis). La conclusion formulée par les occupants nous ramène à la dimension concrète des lieux, à l’idée que nous n’y sommes que de passage :

The Sherry-Klinsky clan remains largely bemused by the extent to which Mr. Clough embellished and embedded their apartment. But Ms. Sherry and Mr. Klinsky are not immune to the romance of objects or messages hidden in walls, or what Ms. Sherry called “winks from one family to another.” 

“You move into a place and you have your life there, and your memories, and it’s all temporary,” she said. “Especially with apartments, which have such a fixed footprint. I like the idea of putting something behind a wall to wink at the next inhabitant and to wish them the good life hopefully that you have had there.”
